  1. VPRM preprocessing • EVI indices; 20th 8-day intervall • EU domain at 1/12x1/8 degree resolution • vegetation class 6, crop • LSWI indices; 20th 8-day intervall • EU domain at 1/12x1/8 degree resolution • vegetation class 6, crop

  2. VPRM preprocessing • tasks of VPRM preprocessing: • retrieval of EVI, LSWI from MODIS data • reprojection from ISIN to Cartesian lat/lon & Lambert conic conformal • regridding from 500m to desired resolution (currently used 1/12x1/8 degree or 10km)‏ • filtering of indices with local polynomial regression fitting (loess)‏ • output is written to netCDF files • technical issues: • little or no optimization was done; processing for large domains, i.e. ZOTTO takes more than one week initially • huge amount of HD space is needed for intermediate files and MODIS data (per domain ca. 40GB of intermediate files, for large domains ca. 90GB of MODIS data)‏ • no automatic detection and handling of regions covered by snow; can be done using MODIS snow products

  3. VPRM preprocessing • current usage: • WRF-VPRM (domain south/west of France) & STILT (EU domain, ZOTTO domain covering east of Europe and north of Asia) in our department • Janusz Eluszkiewicz Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. (domain covering North America)‏ • Dr. John Lin University of Waterloo (domain covering Canada)‏ • future usage: • Lieselotte Tolk University of Amsterdam • domain in Africa used by Rona and Stefan
