If there is a cilioretinal artery, the entire retina will be pale, except for the retinal elements supplied by the cilioretinal artery will be a normal color. In these cases the visual acuity can be maintained despite a marked loss of visual field.
CRAO with ciliary artery sparing The visual field would have been completely obliterated by a CRAO.However, because the cilioretinal artery was there and spared, a small centralvisual field remained, leaving the patient with excellent visual acuity.
