Technology 101: What You Should and Shouldn’t BeDoing in the Computer Lab By Brittney Burchiel (Boyer)
Handling the Technology • Technology includes: Computers, laptops, tablets, SMART Board, and even YOUR cell phone. • Technology should be handled carefully! We are using expensive items that would be hard to replace. • If you break our classroom or lab technology, you may even have to pay for it! • Always use two hands when lifting a laptop and when at a PC, keep both feet on the floor.
Internet Safety • Only visit websites on our Safe list for the day • No Facebook…or Twitter…or Instagram. Period. • Have the teacher check before you send any e-mails. • Rule #1-Never, ever, ever give out private information about yourself. Keep it simple, First name and age. For example: Brittney, 26
Don’t Believe Everything You See or Read • Not everything on the internet is true. In fact, people can make websites saying whatever they want. • Use Safe sites your teacher suggests that have accurate (true) information. • Even my favorite, Wikipedia, can be wrong.
Netiquette • The internet is just like real life, if you would not say something to someone in person, don’t say it online! (Shea, 1994) • Use proper grammar and spelling, even if you are online. Nobody wants to read a comment or an e-mail written in “text speak.” 4 Ex. Thiziz not gonna impress NE1
Cyberbullying • The worst use of the internet is Cyberbullying. • According to Wikipedia (Wiki), Cyberbullying is: “the use of Information Technology to harm or harass other people in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner.” • This means, using the internet to hurt someone very badly emotionally. This could be saying hurtful things, posting mean pictures or comments, spreading rumors online, or sending cruel e-mails.
Cyberbullying • Cyberbullying is ILLEGAL! • People who have been found cyberbullying will be charged with a crime. • If you feel you have been cyberbullied, tell an adult immediately. (Virginia Department of Education)
Downloading • Please do not download anything. • Anything you need is already loaded on our devices. • Downloading is a way that viruses can get into our computers, phones, tablets, etc. and destroy them.
Oops, I hit a filter… • If you see this page, you are at a page you are not allowed to visit, at least at school. • Press Go Back, and try a different website.
Most Importantly • Never tell anyone where they could find you or meet you. • Just like the real world, the online world has scary strangers. Some of them might try to hurt you, if they can.
