Moving You Avatar • Use the up, down, right and left arrows on your keyboard to move (or A, W, S and D). • To move more quickly, click on “fly”, located on the bottom toolbar. You can also press and hold the E key to rise into the air, and use C to descend. • Movement and camera controls are located on the screen in small blue panels. Changing Appearance • Everything can be changed. Hairstyles, clothing, skin tones, etc. • BreakThru has a strict “dress code” as part of its Code of Conduct to avoid inappropriate avatars. This is why we keep login details!
Making Friends • BreakThru participants will be part of two groups: • BreakThru Mentoring • BreakThru Mentoring: High School • Contacting group members is easy, but students can also make personal friends with one another. • Use the Search bar in the top right to find other BreakThru members.
Making Friends Use the Search bar in the top right to find other BreakThru members.
Making Friends If the name exists, Search will bring up details about that person.
Talking with Others • Three main ways to communicate: • Local Chat • Instant Messenger • Voice
Local Chat • Local chat is visible to everyone within a small radius around your avatar. You can only chat with those in close proximity. • Press Enter to bring up the chat bar. Type in the text bar and hit enter. Your text will appear on the screento everyone nearby. • If you want a transcript, click the arrow next to the chat bar. It should open up a box of your whole local chat.
Instant Messenger • Instant Messenger is used for chatting over long in-world distances. Just search for your friends, and IM them! • Instant Messenger is private, so it’s a good option if you want to have a conversation with just one other person.
Instant Messenger Instant Messenger is available from the Search results window.
Voice Chat • There is a microphone symbol on the left of the “talk” button. Use this to adjust your sound levels. Volume will vary with proximity to others. • Always test your sound quality ahead of time and adjust your settings accordingly.
There’s Still Lots to Learn! • This is just a taste of the functions that BreakThru will employ to connect students and mentors. • For additional assistance, join us during the BreakThru orientation seminars, to be held in late August 2011. • The Second Life Quick Start (http://secondlife.com/support/quickstart/basic) goes into much more detail about all aspects of the client.
