What is Denotation & Connotation Denotation is = “The literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.” Connotation is = “An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.”
EXAMPLES OF DENOTATION • “You are a snake .” literally meaning you are a cold blooded scaly snake. • “You are a dog.” actually meaning you are a canine.
EXAMPLES OF CONNOTATION • Pushy refers to someone loud-mouthed and irritating. • Mom and Dad when used in place of mother and father connote loving parents.
