  1. Barbaric or Pop Culture Phenomenon: Fighting in Hockey Brian Rooney

  2. Just to get you acquainted… • Donald Brashear of the Washington Capitals takes on Andrew Peters of the Buffalo Sabres • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlGXe_C-s4o&feature=related

  3. “Old Time Hockey” • Fighting was an even larger part of the game • Players had to be tough as well as have skill • Certain players had to “know their roles” • “The Code” • No attacking skilled players • Protect you own • Momentum • When a fight ends • Respecting the game and opponents • Be your own governing body

  4. Dangers • Though extremely rare, death is a possibility on the ice. • Mostly comes as a result of the head contacting the ice with no helmet between. • Injuries • Broken Hands, fingers, noses, etc. • Referees • Training to deal with situations • When to stop a fight • If starting the fight, you do run the risk of being “rewarded” an extra 2 minute instigator penalty.

  5. 21 Year-old amatuer passes away • About two weeks after an on-ice altercation, Don Sanderson (Whitby, ON, Canada) passed away due to complications from a head injury sustained when his head came in contact with the ice. • Sparks debate over helmet safety and fighting in hockey • Divides the hockey world between new thoughts and old time mentality

  6. Where Fighting is and isn’t allowed • Fighting is allowed in all pro, and most junior leagues around the world. • Not allowed in international and collegiate play. • Not allowed and severely discouraged in any and all youth forums.

  7. Rule Changes • Following 2006 NHL Lockout, all of the hockey world saw major rule changes • These discourage fighting and slower players. • Take out all “stick work” with stricter callings (tripping, hooking, slashing, etc.) • Make it hard for the big “brutes” to keep up

  8. Relation to pop culture • Hockey is the 2nd largest sport worldwide • Rising interest in MMA (UFC), boxing, and violent sports like football • Fan entertainment • Relation into real life
