Speed • The speed of an object is equal to the distance an object travels divided by the time interval.
Speed Δ d = change in distance Δ t = time interval
Speed • For example: • If a car travels 120 km in 2 hours, we can say that the speed = 120 km/2 hours • The car’s speed is 60 km/hour
Average Speed • The average speed of an object is the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken.
Average Speed • Vav= average speed • df = final position • di = initial position • tf = end time • ti = start time
Average Speed • When working on problems about speed, all distance measurements need to be in the same units, as do all time measurements. • So if one measurement is in m and other in km, one of them needs to be converted.
Instantaneous Speed • This is the speed of an object at a particular instant in time.
Constant Speed • If the speed of an object is constant or does not change, its average speed will be the same as its instantaneous speed. • An object has constant speed if its speed is not changing. • Example: • light
