The three types of Honey Bees Worker Drone Queen
Worker • All worker bees are female • The worker bee protects the queen and the hive • It collects nectar and pollen to produce honey • It has a barbed stinger.
Worker Barbed stingers have a series of hooks. If a worker bee stings a mammal or a bird the barbs stick and cause the stinger to injure the worker bee, who quickly dies. However, they also use their stinger in conflicts with other bees and insects and they are able to retract their stinger safely.
Drone • All drones are male. • The drones help the queen make more bees. • Drones do not have stingers because they do not protect the hive. • Drones only live a few weeks!
Queen There is only one queen in a colony. The queen lays all of the eggs. Queen bees do have stingers, but they are smooth and not barbed. She uses her stinger to protect her job and does not die when she stings. She does not leave the hive often.
