Today’s Session Desktop Virtualization: Using XenDesktop, XenServer, and Provisioning Server with Derrick Rountree NUANCE UNIVERSITY
Agenda • Introduction • XenDesktop Architecture • Demo • Q&A
Introduction • Derrick Rountree MCSE, CISSP • Author Security for Microsoft Windows System Administrators: Introduction to Key Information Security Concepts • Contributing Author The Real Citrix CCA Exam Preparation Kit: Prepare for XenApp 5.0
Other Relevant Elsevier Titles • Citrix XenDesktop Implementation: A Practical Guide for IT Professionals, by Gareth R. James
Quick Deploy • Provides an automated XenDesktop setup • Some configuration options are limited • For demos, POCs, and smaller Production environments
Quick Deploy Requirements • A host system with enough resources for the VMs • A master VM with Virtual Desktop Agent running • A user account with the ability to create VMs on the host system • A user with the ability to create machine accounts in Active Directory • A single server install of the core components
Running Quick Deploy • Run in Desktop Studio • You must specify: • Name of the XenDesktop Site • Host to be used for VMs • Resources to be used for VMs • Master image to be used for creation of VMs • The number of VMs to be created • Name of the user group that will have access to the VMs
XenDesktop Core Components • Desktop Delivery Controller • Web Interface • Virtual Desktop Agent • SQL Database • Citrix Licensing Server • Citrix Receiver
Additional XenDesktop Deployment Components • XenServer • Provisioning Server
Desktop Delivery Controller • In charge of coordination between the different components • Determines what XD resources will be available to a user • Directs users to the appropriate desktops • Controls Machine Creation Services
Web Interface • Provides web-based access to XenDesktop resources • Front-end authentication point
Virtual Desktop Agent • Installed on the virtual desktop • Provides an interface between XD and the operating system • Manages update operations and policy enforcement
SQL Database • Holds configuration information • Holds current utilization information
Citrix Licensing Server • Manages licensing for all the XD components • Components allow for a 30 day grace period
Citrix Receiver • Client portion of the deployment • XD is supported on Windows, MAC, Linux, smart phones, a host of other devices
Provisioning Server • Stand-alone product • Uses network booting and streaming technology • Works with both physical and virtual desktops • For XenDesktop • Provides streamed desktops • Portions of the desktop are delivered as needed
XenServer • Stand-alone product • Robust resource configuration and management options • Provides ‘host’ capabilities using the Xen hypervisor
