MOTIVATION • Continental benchmarking • Country and regional snapshot of SDG performance, implementation gaps and challenges • Support decision-making on policies and resource prioritization • Provide greater details on trends within country and across African peers • Complement official sustainable development monitoring efforts

KEY FINDINGS – Africa Dashboard • Steepest challenges are SDG 3, SDG 9, and SDG 16 with more than 80% of countries scoring red. • SDG 2, SDG 7 and SDG 14 70% of the countries scored red. • For 13 of the 17 goals, not a single African country has achieved green status. • SDG 13 and SDG12 are the best performing goals.
Trends • Best trend SDG 13 • Worst trends goals 4, 11, and 16, majority of countries are stagnating. • Troubling number of countries that have adverse trends in SDGs 1 and 15. • Most frequently-observed trend is stagnation, for SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 16.
Cluster Analysis Distressed: This small group of countries has the worst overall SDG performance, and contains most of the lowest performing SDG countries. Emerging: This group of countries performs slightly better than distressed countries, but still has significant shortcomings in SDG performance. Middle of the Pack: Most diverse. Best regional performance in terms of SDG 12 and SDG 13. Its average performance is the median among clusters for 12 of 17 goals Growing: This is a group of countries that is growing quickly, as indicated by the best score on SDG 8 (economic growth and good jobs). Continental Leaders: This group of countries, consisting of North African and small island states, leads the continent on 11 of 17 goals, especially those relating to human welfare.
