  2. Positional Sanctification/Justification is a work of God and is based on faith alone. Experiential Sanctification is a work of man and God and is achieved by faith plus works.

Matthew 16:24-26, Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, v.23 and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 "For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his lifefor My sake shall find it. 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  5. Both “life” and “soul” are translated from the same Greek word PSUCHE(yuch). The phrase, “save a soul” is never used salvifically in the Bible. PSUCHE The nonmaterial inner life of human beings for which the body serves as a dwelling place: soul, inner self.

  6. These verses are NOT about eternal salvation! Eternal salvation and discipleship are separate issues, eternal salvation is free, but discipleship is costly. In salvation, Christ paid the price; In discipleship, the believer pays the price. Eternal salvation determines eternal destiny; discipleship determines temporal and eternal rewards. The sinner’s willingness to work or to suffer are not conditions of justification/eternal salv.

[forfeit true life] or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  8. What He appears to be saying is this: “Whoever decides to avoid the hardships of self-denial and cross-bearing will in fact forfeit the essential quality of the life he is trying to gain. On the other hand, whoever submits himself to God by self-denial and hardships will discover the greater essential quality of life he was willing to give up.” This interpretation would therefore not describe eternal salvation, but a higher quality of experience with God in this life.

  9. James 1:19, This you know my beloved brethren . . . James 1:21, Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive (imp)the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. EMPHUTOSemfutws (adj. asm) to germinate, to grow, spring up, produce James 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

  10. Many passages in the Bible use a figure of speech called a metonymy(substituting one word for another, soul stands for the whole person). By analogy, when someone says, “All hands on deck!” the speaker wants bodies attached to the hands. Save your souls stands for saving the lives of wandering believers. In this passage, the meaning is to save the person’s life from physical death.   11. James 2:14, What use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? James 5:20, … he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. The word “save” in James deals exclusively with the phase-two deliverance of the believer. experiential sanctification taking the high road

  12. James urged his regenerate brethren to use the Word in order to save their lives from the deadly power [and consequences]of sin [and indifference]. The book of James is a lifesaver, not a ball-and-chain type of litmus test for ascertaining whether or not one has believed the gospel with the right kind of faith.

  13. Romans 10:9-10, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus asLord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; 10 for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

  14. 2 Peter 1:10, Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing/election you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;
