Irregular verbs • Basically there are two types of irregular verbs: those that are irregular only in the first person singular and those that exhibit irregularities in most of their forms.
A. Irregular yo form • caerto fallcaigo • darto give doy • hacerto dohago • ponerto putpongo • saberto knowsé • salirto go outsalgo • tenerto havetengo • traerto bringtraigo • valerto be worthvalgo • verto seeveo
Note: • Verbs that end in –cer or –cir also are irregular in the yo form: • Conocer (to know)> conozco; • Traducir (to translate)> traduzco
-cer: • aparecerto appear • crecerto grow • merecerto deserve • obedecerto obey • ofrecerto offer • parecerto seem • reconocerto recognize
-cir: • conducirto drive • producir to produce • deducir to deduce
Verbs that end in –uir: construir (to build), contribuir (to contribute), destruir (to destroy) drop the –ir and add a –y except in the nosotros and vosotros form. • Construir construyo construyes construye construimos construís construyen
C. Stem-changing verbs • The stem changing verbs change the stressed vowel of the stem in the following manner: e> ie, e > i, o > ue,u > ue • The nosotros and vosotrosformkeep the vowel from the infinitive. • Verbs of this kind are indicated in vocabulary lists by writing the vowel change in parenthesis: • Cerrar (ie); pedir (i); poder (ue); jugar (ue)
