Kendo • Meaning: “The Way of the Sword” • Modern Japanese martial art • Similar to fencing • Competition for men, women, boys, and girls
Kendo Equipment • Bogu: armor • Katana is Japanese word for sword, but kendo sword is called Shinai • Helmet is called men • Gloves called kote • Breastplate called do • Waist protected by tare • Under Bogu is a jacket, hakama, and towel wrapped around head
Kyudo • Meaning: “The Way of the Bow” • Based on Kyujutsu (art of archery) • Used bows in wars, now in competition • Can be men and women
Kyudo equipment • Bow is called The Yumi (over 2 meters long) Made of bamboo, wood and leather • Arrow called Ya. Made w/ bamboo • Fletchingsof Yamade of hawk or eagle feathers • Glove for arrow holding hand called Yugake (made of deerskin)
