Literary Device Focus: Symbols Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Today, I will identify and analyze how figurative language adds meaning to the text by writing my analysis of the different levels of symbols from Lord of the Flies.
Symbol • A character, action, setting, or object representing something else in a story
3 Levels of a Symbol • Level 1 • What is the object/who is the person? • Level 2 • What does the object/person represent? • Level 3 • What does the Level 2 representation represent?
What is this object? Level 1
Level 1 • Hat and rolled up paper
What does the object represent? Level 2
Level 2 • Graduation
Level 3 • Graduation • Hard work • Success • Working toward a good future • Motivation
Can you think of another image that symbolizes the same ideas? • Talk with your partner and be prepared to share
Symbols in Lord of the Flies • The conch shell • The huts and shelters • The choir/hunters • Fire • The jungle • The mountain • The assembly platform • Piggy’s glasses • Darkness and the beastie
Your turn! • In your groups, you will analyze a symbol on all 3 levels. • Each member must write down his/her analysis of each level. • As a group, you will combine the group answers on your large sheet of paper. • Next, you will move as a group to see a different symbol. You will take notes on this symbol before moving on to the next symbol.
Level 1: What is the object? Level 2: What does the object represent? Level 3: What does the representation represent?
Try it on your own… • Analyze Piggy’s glasses on all 3 levels • Level 1: What is the object? • Level 2: What does the object represent? • Level 3: What does the representation represent?
