  3. Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) • Born in Staunton, Virginia. • Son of a respected Presbyterian. • Had difficulty as a student and may have been dyslexic. • Davidson college in North Carolina. • Became president in 1913

  4. Warren G. Harding (1865-1923) • Born November 2, 1865in Corsica (now Blooming Grove) • Died from a heart attack August 3, 1923 • Eldest of eight children born to Dr. George Tryton Harding • Married Florence Kling De Wolfe, the daughter of his nemesis, Amos Hall Kling • Became president in 1921

  5. Warren G. Harding (1865-1923) • Republican • Eliminated wartime controls • Established Federal budget system • Limitations on immigration

  6. Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) • Born in Plymouth, Vermont • Amherst College • Governor of Massachusetts • Became President in 1923

  7. Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) • Conservative • Called for foreign isolation, tax cuts, and limited aid for farmers • Vetoed farm relief bills twice and shot down plan to produce cheap electric power on the Tennessee River

  8. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) • Born in Iowa to Quaker family • Stanford University • Worked in China • Helped people during the Boxer Rebellion • Appointed as head of Food Administration • Became president in 1929

  9. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) • Stock market crashed months after he was elected • Blamed for depression • Laissez-faire policy • Ran for president again in 1932 • Harsh defeat by Roosevelt
