2. What is Scientific Notation? Scientific Notation is used to express very large or small numbers.
3. Example of Scientific Notation. The distance from the earth to the sun is about 93,000,000.
To scientists or astronauts they cant keep on writing in regular form so they write in scientific notation.
4. First Step First, you must find the decimal in the number .
In this case it would be behind the zero in the ones place.
93,000,000.
5. Second Step Second, you need to move the decimal over to where the number is less than 10 and more than 1.
So with this number we would simplify to: 9.3 or 9.3000000.
Now the number is less than 10.
6. Third Step Now we must figure out how many places we moved the decimal over.
9 3 0 0 0 0 0 0
So we moved it over 7 times.
7. Now we should write it in scientific notation Weve figured out everything we need to know.
9.3 and we moved it over 7 times
=
9.3 times 10 to the 7th power
We have just learned how to learn and write scientific notation.
8. Lets used what we have learned and see if we can solve a problem The diameter of a cells is about 1 micrometer or .000006.
How would a scientist or biologists write this in scientific notation.
9. First Step (Remember) As you may remember we have to find the decimal.
The decimal is here: .000006
10. Second Step Now we need to make it more than 1 and less than 10.
We will have to make it 6.
11. Third Step
How many times did we move it over?
We moved it over 6 times
12. Use what weve figured out.
We know we changed it to 6
and we moved it over 6 times
=
6* 10 to the power of 6
13. The End!!!
