Background • In July of 1956, Israeli Forces along with French and English troops pushed into Egypt • This was in response to the nationalization of the Suez Canal • The Suez Canal was constructed by the French • Egypt and Israel would sporadically battle throughout history • Israel was mad at the U.S. for not funding the construction of the Aswan Dam
The Threat • This could disrupt the Worlds economy with the oil in the Middle East • Major Countries have so much invested into the area politically, economically and socially • We have to keep the land we have there • We do not want the Soviets to intervene • This is the first real time we are not in control since being a world power
What Happened • The Israelis attacked first at the border, on October 26, 1956 aiming to take back the Canal • Britain and France joined two days later and took control of the area around the canal. • Khrushchev helped Egypt hoping to gain a foot hold in the middle east
Actions to Take • Stay in isolation (Monroe Doctrine) • Suez Canal Users Association (SCUA) which lets 18 of the worlds biggest maritime nations • Let the U.N. go into the Middle east and resolve the conflict
