Free Online Converters: A Useful Tool or too Good to be True?
“Nothing in life is free.” We’ve all heard the saying before. Nothing in life that is worth having is available for nothing. On the same hand, we’ve all heard the phrase “the best things in life come free.” Which is it?
While it’s true that there are a good number of free online converters available online—millions in fact—the question still stands: Is it a good idea to use one of these free online converters?
The first question we need to ask ourselves is why a particular website would offer its services or software for free. How does the owner of the website or the developer of the software stand to benefit from this sort of liberal distribution?
The first answer—and by far the most heinous—is compromise the user’s data or otherwise degrade the browsing experience. Some online converters operate by sending their users an e-mail containing either a link to their converted files or place them for download directly in an attachment.
When a user provides his or her information—such as an e-mail address—to the site, that contact information is either shared with or sold to third party advertising companies. The user then receives unsolicited advertisements or other unwanted contact in their inbox.
The second answer might be that the free conversion software is simply the work of a programming enthusiast that genuinely would like to share his or her work freely online for the benefit of others.
These types of programs are often described as “open source.” While open source software is often excellently written and very safe, by its very nature other programmers with either a lack of technical skill or malicious intent and negatively alter the way that this software operates and offer it on their own site.
A general lack of quality control could lead to unstable and potentially hazardous software that might be better left alone.
The third answer is one that is commonly seen by reputable software companies on the Internet: a free trial version of their conversion program is available to consumers to assist in a more informed purchasing decision in the future.
While many free trial versions of conversion software are limited in the number of features that are available, many are fully functional. This allows consumers to see first-hand what exactly this particular program is capable of and if it will meet their specific needs.
Of course, the goal of these software companies is that the consumer will choose to make a purchase at the end of the trial period.
My intention for writing this post is that my readers will come away with a better understanding of why online file converters exist and how to distinguish between various types of online file converters.
By keeping in mind the particular goal of the software publisher, I trust that you can make the best decision possible when it comes to selecting an online file converter.
