  2. The New York Timesrecently ran an article about the stipulation that World Cup security guards face. Namely, they aren’t allowed to watch the game, not even for a minute.

  3. Instead, these guards are asked to watch the stands, the crowd, and the emergency exits.

  4. We’re actually a little baffled that this is news. It’s standard practice for event security, whether you’re working a sports event, a concert, or some other type of live show.

  5. It might sound like you’re getting “free admission” to a cool event. But if you really think it through, you can’t possibly keep anyone safe if you’re watching the performance like everyone else. After all, the entire crowd is doing that, and they aren’t exactly alert to potential dangers.

  6. Why should they be? They pay good money for admission with the expectation that the security staff will work to keep them safe.

  7. There are lots of great event security opportunities out there for those who can stay focused in spite of the distractions provided by the entertainment. If you’ve got this skill then make sure that you emphasize it during your job interview.

  8. You could even share a story about a time that you kept your eye on the ball in spite of multiple temptations to do otherwise.

  9. You might hear, “Why should I hire you?” And you might say: “Since you’re looking for venue security I suspect you’ve got some challenges when it comes to finding guards who can stay focused, right? Well, I’ve got four siblings, and I’ve got ‘staying focused’ down to a science.

  10. One night they came home with a movie I really wanted to see–but I had a major project due. I knew if I snuck glances at the TV I’d never get it done, so I just tuned them out, finished up, and got my A. I just watched the movie that weekend!”

  11. Obviously you’re going to substitute your own story. The idea is to make it clear that your primary concern is going to be keeping the patrons safe–and not on trying to watch the football game.
