Action Plan EDPD 581 Nicole McRae
My “AHA” Moment My “AHA” moment came when I saw Dragnifier and VueBar. I always encouraged my ‘non-writers’ in my Communications 11 class to use the computers in the classroom while working on assignments. One student in particular would always complain about how the screen bothered her eyes, and she could not read the fonts very easily. I was constantly having to send her to the Resource Room to have an EA scribe for her, because I had no support in my classroom. If only I knew about these programs, this student could have stayed in my classroom with her peers and been content typing away. This resource would assist ALL learners because the computer screen is not always an easy resource to work with.
How will I use what I have learned to continue with my own personal / professional growth? • Free Resources – I was amazed at the many free resources that are available to educators. So many of my colleagues are not aware of these, and would benefit from using them. I will share these amazing resources with them. • I have used Kurzweil before but only briefly with International students, but now I can see the benefits of many different learners using this program • The new resources that I was introduced to: Vue Bar, Dragnifier, and Microsoft Word Talk, show me that there are endless possibilities to assist every learner.
When back in the classroom what will I incorporate into my day to make learning accessible and engaging to all? • I will use many different forms of assistive technology that all of the students will enjoy. • Wikipedia Simple was another favorite resource that I was not aware of. Even though I teach at the high school level, Wikipedia is often a challenging source for the students. The ‘simple’ version will assist all students in the classroom.
What do I hope to share with my school and district? • I will share all of the amazing resources that I learned about with my staff at school. • We have Kurzweil on our computers, but I do not think it is used to its potential. • The peer tutors will be more involved with the students they are working with because they will be more knowledgeable about materials that are available. (My wiki is for peer tutors) • Now that I have an understanding of the resources, I can also share this information with the parents of my students for home study. • Districts #68 and #69 have held seminars for the past couple of years (that I know of) where teachers come together and share some strategies that have been successful in their classroom. Sharing these possibilities of resources and accessibility to them with that group would benefit both districts. The grapevine is a great way for news to travel, and this seminar would be perfect.
