  2. Objectives The objectives of this presentation on repositioning residents in bed are: • Identify proper body mechanics for moving a resident up in bed • Identify possible energy conservation and work simplification techniques for moving a resident up in bed • Demonstrate knowledge of the steps to efficiently move a resident up in bed

  3. Please follow the Link for the Pre-Test and Return to PowerPoint When Done https://goo.gl/forms/1lWYlc4cJFV5QBds2

  4. Reminders From the Healthcare Academy Safe Movement Training Session • If ear is in front of the midpoint of shoulder, your head is too far forward • If you can see your shoulder blade, your back is too far rounded • One shoulder should not appear higher than the other. • If you are experiencing pain while doing your job, focus on changing your posture to see if that helps please visit healthcareacademy.com for more information on safe movement training

  5. Body Mechanics The most important body mechanic principles for positioning a resident in bed are: • Raise bed to prevent excessive bending • Feet shoulder width apart for a good base of support • When bending, make sure to bend at hips and knees • Shift movement from one leg to another in the direction of movement • Bend at the knees to lower center of gravity • Aim to use leg muscles instead of back muscles

  6. Energy Conservation & Work Simplification The most important energy conservation and work simplification techniques for positioning a resident in bed are: • Complete this task with a co-worker • Ask resident to roll into a side-lying position to place draw sheet • Roll them to the other side to pull draw sheet through • Evenly distribute the resident's weight to make lifting easier • Band fold the draw sheet to get a good grip and form strong handles • If the residents can assist, ask them to bend their knees and push

  7. Tips to Remember When Positioning A Resident in Bed • Place pillow at top of bed to prevent resident’s head from hitting • Ask resident to place arms across their chest • One person counts to three to ensure correct timing of the movement • Make sure wrinkles are out of sheet to prevent skin breakdown • Fan-fold the sheet so there is a stronger material and it is easier to grab
