  3. WHAT IS THE ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM? The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism offers instruction for students in grades 9-12. The Academy offers an opportunity for students to develop the skills and sense of commitment that is in great demand in the fields of travel management positions. In today’s competitive market, students need strong skills and maturity to thrive in our ever-changing world. Susan E. Wagner High School’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism provides students with a stimulating program that enables them to acquire the skills necessary for the future. A solid background in Geography, English, Foreign Language, and Technology will give the selected students the edge they need to succeed.

  4. WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM? Students will beselected for The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism during their eighth grade school year. Applicants will be chosen based on grades, standardized test scores, and input from teachers and counselors. Parental permission is required and students must express interest in an educational experience that prepares them for employment and career outcomes. Students will be exposed to job shadowing, mentoring, field trips, and internships.

  5. WHAT WILL STUDENTS STUDY IN THE ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM? • Geography • Global Studies • Related Electives • International Marketing • College Level Courses in Senior Year • Computer Systems and Applications • Foreign Language (minimum two years)

WHY IS THE ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM EXCEPTIONAL? • Students experience an easier transition to adult life. • Enhanced opportunities for employment after graduation. • The opportunity to attend conferences, trade shows, and college fairs. • Students see the connection between what they learn in school and the larger world. • Six to eight weeks of paid internships at companies in travel, hospitality, and related industries. • An introduction to all facets of the Hospitality and Tourism industry and exposure to current technology through real life experiences. • Hospitality and Tourism is a comprehensive, standards-based career education sequence developed by industry and education experts.

  7. HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN INTERNSHIP • Determine career and locations of interest • Explore internship options • Begin the application process • Prepare for the interview • Acceptance and preparing to start the internship

  8. JOB SHADOWING Job Shadowing is an academically motivating activity designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at the world of work. Students across America will “shadow” workplace mentors as they go through a normal day on the job. The program invites students to see firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace.

  9. TOASTMASTERS Is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Through its member clubs, Toastmasters helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking.
