Human Sacrifices • Victim would be placed on a slab on top of the temple • Rip open his/her chest and have heart taken out • Other ways of sacrifices • Shot with arrows, burned, skinned, or drowned. • Pleasing Gods • Sacrifices pleased the gods to keep on helping the Aztecs and if gods were mad or displeased there will be a sacrifices. • Obligation • Victims were treated with the up most respect like as if a god. • No sacrifices, everything will stop • Cannibalism- Some scholars believe that Aztec were lacking proper nutrition so they resorted to cannibalism to get there meat and nutrition
Human Sacrifices • Gods & Goddesses • Huitzilopochtli – regular sacrifices • Tezcatlipoca - regular sacrifices • Huehueteotl -regular sacrifices • Tláloc- sacrifieced children by drowning • Chicomecoatl- sacrificing a young girl: • Chalchihuitlicue – sacrficed children • Cinteotl – sacrificed virgins • Coatlicue - sacrifice a young woman to her just before any major hunt. • Mictlantecuhtli – skinned sacrifices • Mixcoatl – sacrificed a man and women • Quetzalcoatl – animal sacrifices • XipeTotec – sacrifices fighters • Toci – sacrifices young girls • Tlaltecuhtli – thought to swallow hearts of her sacrificed victims • Tlazolteotl – sacrificed prostitutes
War • Warriors • Draft age: 17 yr • Elite warriors • Jaguars – wore jaguar skin • Eagles – wore feathered helmets • Weapons - stabbing javelins, wooden spears, obsidian knives, and clubs and round shields • Enemy were captured for human sacrifices • Alliances & Conquering- Made for economic growth and expansion of the society
