outdoor decking materials • Natural wood and wood plastic composites (WPC) are 2 common types of outdoor decking materials used in the market today. • We all know that traditional wood can catch fire easily, but wood plastic composite (WPC) floors are made to be fire resistant to keep your property and, more importantly, your family safe. • Researchers have found that the wood fiber content in wood plastic composite planks makes them flame resistant and a better choice than wood.
WPC planks - flame proof material • WPC planks are popularly being used in a wide range of exterior applications which include gates, louvers, partitions, sunscreens, signage, wall & ceiling cladding, decking, landscaping and a whole lot more exterior products around homes. • Being a flame proof material, WPC planks do not burn with flame and allow fire to spread keeping your property safe. Whereas, traditional wood planks supports the fire to spread as it burns with flame.
So what makes WPC retardant? • WPC consist of plastic and wood and a combination of stabilizing agents, foaming agents, and modifiers that are combined in a proper ratio. This perfect blend of materials helps to get high-quality WPC planks that are resistant to fire. • Several fire resisting chemicals have been utilized in order to improve fire behavior of WPC. Adding such chemicals, particularly ammonium polyphosphate has shown to be effective in improving the fire performance of WPC.
WPC - self-extinguishing • Wood catches fire and keeps on burning even if the heating source is removed. This is not the case with WPC, as it is a polymer based product. It is self-extinguishing and doesn’t ignite fire when in touch with a fire source. • The fire-retardant properties of WPC planks have been enhanced by adding halogen-free fire retardants to the wood-polymer mixture during the melt phase.
WPC - best cladding/decking material • Fire occurs when a substance becomes hot enough to reach ignition temperature (around 150 degrees C) in the presence of sufficient oxygen. • The density of the wood plastic composite planks is much higher, and so is the melting point. • While comparing, the limiting oxygen index of traditional wood board is 27%, and that of an untreated WPC board is 19% which reduces the material’s flammability. Thus WPC wins over natural wood and is considered as one of the best cladding/decking material for fire prone areas.
WPC gives you the best of both worlds. Looking much like natural wood, WPC planks are extremely durable and resistant to fire, damage, water, stains, mold, UV fading, and they don’t splinter or crack. They can also last for decades with no maintenance. With modern technology, you can achieve a gorgeous, realistic wood look without the challenges of traditional wood.
