How did she become famous? • She became famous because she fought for the rights of all the people living in Guatemala. • One other possible reason is for her books. • She has written bibliographies about her life in Guatemala.
What about her family? • She had three brothers and had a father and a mother. • Two of her brothers died while she was only 8. • Then her father, mother, and brother died from torture, rape, and one was burned alive. • Her family worked on a plantation in her early years.
Rigoberta is now the only person in her family. Her brothers and parents die for many different reasons.
What did she do to win the Nobel prize? • She was awarded the Nobel prize for two reasons. • One was her work for social justice • Fair treatment and distribution of advantages, assets, and benefits among all members of a society. • Second was her work for the rights of indigenous people.
Why were her books so famous? • Her books were famous for several reasons. • First, they were about her life. • She also wrote about how other people around her were like. • Second, It tells how she felt about everything that was happening and what it was like to go through it.
Did she win when she ran for President? • Unfortunately, no. • When she ran two of the members in her party were killed while most were threatened. • After the election, she gave a message of peace.
Was everything she said in her books true? • Most of her writing in her books is true. • Some people like David Stoll, who thoroughly investigated Menchu’s story, say some of it was false • He even claims that her autobiography, which won her the Nobel peace prize, has false claims.
