The African Library Project: An Introduction PFEStaffMeeting October 12, 2009
From PDS to Peace Corps Two Years Ago Now Gray’s Woods Elementary Ha Sefako, Lesotho
The African Library Project “…I've been working for the past year as a resource teacher for 4 primary schools in a very rural village in Lesotho. I work with about 32 teachers to help them teach their students in new and exciting ways. We also focus on their classroom management, material development, and different teaching methods. The students are taught mostly in English and all of their exams are written in English. I have been helping the students as they learn to read, write and speak English. Our biggest problem is there are no books in my village!! I have applied to African Library Project, a non-profit based in New Orleans, to try and create a library in each of the schools I work with…”
The African Library Project “…Most of the education volunteers in my group have also applied for books through the program, however not everyone has a donor to work with in the States yet; we still need to find 15 donors before November! As a donor you would be collecting approximately 1,000 books and $500 for the cost of shipping the books…There are some really fun and creative ways to undergo this project and we all would appreciate it so much-especially the children of Lesotho, who in most cases have never even held a picture book before…” – Email from Michael Dissen (excerpt), 10/2/09

What’s Next? Volunteer students, interns, and teachers from SCASD and Penn State are building teams to organize book drives and will keep everyone informed of logistics and guidelines as we proceed. PDS interns are also creating “public service announcements” about this project to show students at All-School Gathering and to show parents via school websites. If you or your class would like to be involved in this service learning opportunity, please let us know!
Some Closing Thoughts This project speaks to many of us because we feel connected not only to PDS interns, but to teachers and children everywhere. If this effort calls to you as well, we hope you will join us… but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. We are not asking for monetary donations, but rather gently used books that may be sitting underused in our homes and organizations. We also need extra hands to set up book collection sites and to sort and pack books for shipping. If we receive more books than we can ship and/or books that are inappropriate for ALP libraries, we will donate books to local organizations that help children in our own community: ALL donations will be gratefully accepted!
