Slang as a phenomenon in modern linguistics • The Encyclopedia Britannica “…nonstandard vocabulary composed of words or senses primarily by connotations of extreme informality and usually by a currency not limited to a particular religion. It is composed typically of coinages or arbitrarily changed words, clipped or shortened forms, extravagant, forced or facetious figures of speech, or verbal novelties.” 4
Slang as a phenomenon in modern linguistics • Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary “Slang is nonstandard vocabulary composed of words or senses characterized primarily by connotations of extreme informality and usually by a currency not limited to a particular region .It is composed typically coinages or arbitrarily changed words, clipped or shortened forms, extravagant, or facetious figures of speech, or verbal novelties.” . 5
Slang and its function in the language system 1.Slang items usually aren’t long-live great – boos – evil hand – grabbers – paws crazy person – nut - psycho 2. The slang speech is considered to be the attribute of a poor culture -Hi!-Hi!-Hey, boy, how are you getting on?-I have got a jam time.-Hey, buddy, take it easy!-I’m flaking out!-Relax! - Hail! -Hi! -Hey kiddo, how are things? -I’m off my feed. I’ve the blans. -Hey buzzard, don’t be mad! -Dull sville, jawn. -Chill out! Coffee – brew Money – bread Body – bod Boob tube – television Grub – food Pad - hands 3. Slang brings great variety into the speech of different classes and layers of society Barf – out: a displeasing person or affair. “That room was a real barf – out.” Chicken: coward. “Don’t be such chicken!” Couch potato: a person who watches too much television. “Why did I have to married such couch potato?” 7
Features of youth slang • The first is slang is in opposition to the official system - What has gone down? Why are you so budded? - Stop bugging me! Puck off! - Watch your tongue! - Get lost. • The second is its creation by the collective activity • The third is the communicative function of slang • The fourth is slang as a universal type of language 8
Conclusion The importance of the results: slang should be learned in order to simplify communication, because the spoken language differs from literary standards. But people should understand the special usage of slang. Also, the slang can have practical usage for translating lexics, dialogues, popular texts and modern magazines, newspapers in schools. 9
