Mini Lesson: Analyze political cartoon and read aloud of article “Not those Huddled masses” Independent: Answer the following questions from “Not those Huddle Masses”. • Explain why in early history America welcomed immigrants. • What is a nativist and explain some of their goals? • Describe the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. • What types of restriction policies were passes to control the “quality of immigrants entering America? • In 1917 explain the requirements for immigrants to enter America. Why was this unfair to “New Immigrants”? • Explain the Emergency quota Act of 1921 • Explain the main idea of the cartoon on page 30. Create a list of pros & cons for immigrants entering into America. Come to a conclusion and write a one/two paragraph statement in favor or against immigration. Group Work: Groups will receive a document related to nativism; students are to answer the following questions about the documents than explain their documents to the group. • What Immigrant group is being targeted in this cartoon and explain how you know this. • Evaluate what ethic stereotypes can be seen in the document • What attitude does the document show towards immigrants? Justify your answer with examples for the document. Whole Class: Go over documents.
