Guidelines for Paraprofessional Tutors Tutors should be trained by certified reading specialists. Tutors need ongoing training and feedback. The child should work with the same tutor in each session. Tutors must be reliable and punctual. A certified specialist should be present during the tutoring sessions to answer questions and provide input. Tutoring sessions need to be structured. Tutors should use high-quality instructional materials. The reading specialist needs to assess the tutee on a regular basis. The instruction in the tutoring session must coordinate with classroom instruction.
