Why is Intelligence NOT a Factor? • Does not address character factors • Work ethic, determination, motivation, (family) • Your actions/maturity are far more important. • Social skills and communication skills are an integral part of success.
Why so much Inequality? Schools Reinforce Factors of Family Background -Hierarchical Prestige of schools -Funding Patterns -Tracking, -Gifted and Talented Programs Motivation, determination, social skills, dress, speech, and are Reproduced by socialization, primarily in the family.
Asian-American/Mainstream Cultural Congruence -There is a strong congruence between mainstream workplace Values .-respect for authority, Punctuality, cleanliness, thrift, perserverence. – But, they are the desired values for the working class. –Not the Middle class. –The more Middle class values of spontaneity, independence, and vision are strongly associated with management, administration, and leadership. This is the reason for lower status, jobs. Their jobs tend to be low-decion-making, low management, and low public contact.
What are the implications forAsian Americans • Your ability to advance on a job is going to be severely limited. • Lower level of language skills can hold them back. • Interpersonal skills are relatively uncultivated. • High tech-working class. • Absence of role models who are successful in communication-rich. • Do not appreciate the value of individual assertiveness.
What are the implications for Asian American Students? • The regimentation limits the development of leadership skills. • Absence of the quality to cultivate and execute a vision. • Lack of development of the social and communication skills. • High tech labor jobs. • Tend not to be in the decision-making positions and positions where there is interaction with the public.
Re-examination cont. Asian American parents approach Education and career options were approached in terms of Survival strategies-especially to avoid the drudgery of low-status Entrepreneurial labor. –The sciences and math, having a track Record of Asian participation, are seen as safer pathways to Success-Therefore they steer their children in this direction - Reshaping Instruction- “Counseling”-Asian American students to explore broader career Options. Re-Define “Success”-Participation, communication in addition to High test scores. What approaches to “instruction” help to create a fuller experience Of ‘success?”
How does NCLB exacerbate this problem? • The schools only look at test scores and ignore their other considerable.
What approaches to “instruction” create a more complete ‘success?” • Communications-oriented relationships. • Emphasize US. Culture within he context of the curriculum. • Collaboration oriented work and emphasize explanation as part of evaluation.
