About the Project • Challenge • Copenhagen already enjoys a large population of cyclists, however it is still trying to attract more people to this mode of travel. One way to help do this is to make cyclist data open – to broadcast “vectors” of where bikes travel, what they encounter along the way, how they rate the route, etc. • Solution • The Vector Project seeks to create “smart” pathways in an intelligent, integrated transport system. Through our mobile phone app, we engage a critical mass of cyclists generate that an open, query-able visualisation of movement through Copenhagen. The Vector Project taps an abundant resource that's renewed every time our wheels turn, i.e. our vectors leverage our impulse to log and to share them. • Results • The Vector Project promotes heath and sustainability as cyclists visualise distance, speed, energy expenditure, carbon and cost savings. It increases magnitude, richness and relevance of circulation data and informs an infrastructure that adapts to real behaviour. It provides heightened responsiveness to problems on the network, as a wide base of cyclists gets a channel to report urban issues. Service providers gain incentives to cycle as the location-aware channel reduces coordination costs between the service provider and customer.
