WMA & MP3 • Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio data compression technology developed by Microsoft. • The definition of MP3 means a compression of a sound sequence into a very small file, to enable digital storage and transmission. WMA MP3
WMA • Plays on xbox360 and MCE2005 • Plays on Music Match and can be tagged with Super Tagging. • Album art can be tagged into file vs. using folder.jpg. • Sounds the same as other lossless formats like FLAC. • WMA format is the format's support of DRM, or Digital Rights Management. • Decode time. • Any issues around DRM. • The WMA format is the lack of support from third party devices such as MP3 players • Although some support WMA files, such as Microsoft's own Zune, many do not. • The Apple iPod does not support WMA. MP3 • Widespread acceptance, support in nearly all hardware audio players and devices. • An ISO standard, part of MPEG specs. • Fast decoding, lower complexity than AAC or Vorbis. • Anyone can create their own implementation (Specs and demo sources available) • Relaxed licensing schedule • Lower performance/efficiency than modern codecs • Problem cases that trip out all transform codecs • Sometimes, maximum bitrate (320kbps) isn’t enough. • No multichannel implementations. • Unusable for high definition audio Pros Cons
