Introduction Employees who drink, abuse other substances, and show other types of nonproductive behavior during theworkday can spell disaster for obvious reasons. Supervisors who demonstrate they can identify workplace substance abuse are more likely to have an impact on preventing or putting a stop to this dangerous behavior. When Supervisors suspect Abuse is a problem: • Don’t directly accuse employees • Don’t try to counsel or advise employees yourself. • Make an employee understand his or her job performance is not acceptable • Refer the employees to the appropriate resource (EAP, community counseling center, or substance abuse professional)
What are EAPs? • Programs to help employees deal with personal problems that might adversely impact their work performance, health, and well-being.
History Overview • Been around since 1960’s • Started as alcoholism treatment programs • Expanded in the 1980’s to address other issues • Today 2/3 of referrals are not related to substance abuse
Roles of an Employer • Must be aware of employee problems by over seeing work performance • Must be willing to listen Steps Taken: 3. Follow through employees progress 1. Approach employee 2. Refer them to an EAP

Why do I need EAP’s? • Up to 68% of all workers will, at some time, experience workplace problems • 35% of employees who had been at a job for less than 2 years report that they quit because of stress • 47% of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol consumption • 70% of all current adult illegal drug users are employed • The number of employee lawsuits has been doubling every year since the mid-1980's
Why and how to create policies? • Having these policies will increase profitability, attendance, health and happinessfor your business. • Consider these 5 steps when creating Substance Abuse Policies
1.Companies must determine their stance on substance abuse with help from diverse groups.
2. Once the policy is developed, it must be clearly communicated to the entire staff
3. Supervisors must be trained to recognize symptoms of abuse and understand how it impairs work performance
5. Policies should include a counseling and referral component so employees can seek help confidentially before being referred by management

Employee Drug Testing • Detects and also prevents substance abuse in the workplace • May cause resentment among employees
How Is Drug Testing Preformed? • By taking small samples of: fingernails, saliva, blood, urine or hair, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Positive Results • If results come back positive, according to the company, the employee may be placed in a recovery program or fired from the job.
