Codon A sequence of three nucleotides that together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule. 64 codons
Anti-Codon A sequence of three nucleotides in a region of folding molecules that transport amino acids from the cytoplasm to a ribosomes that recognizes a coding triplet of nucleotides in messenger RNA during translation by the ribosomes in protein.
Translation The process in which cellular ribosomes create proteins.
Transcription When a particular segment of DNA is copied into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. Occurs in the nucleus.
M-RNA Messenger RNA is a large family of RNA molecules that convey genetic information from DNA to the ribosome. Occurs in transcription.
T-RNA Small RNA molecules that carry amino acids to the ribosome for polymerization into a polypeptide.
R-RNA Ribosomal ribonucleic acid is the RNA component of the ribosome, and is essential for protein synthesis in all living organisms.
Intron A segment of a DNA or RNA molecule that does not code for proteins and interrupts the sequence of genes.
Exon A segment of a DNA or RNA molecule containing information coding for a protein or peptide sequence.
Helicase Enzymes that bind and may even remodel nucleic acid or nucleic acid protein complexes.
DNA Polymerase A type of enzyme that is responsible for forming new copies of DNA, in the form of nucleic acid molecules.
RNA Polymerase A polymerase that catalyzes the synthesis of a complementary strand of RNA from a DNA template, or, in some viruses, from an RNA template.
Where does translation occur? It occurs on the ribosome.
Where does transcription occur? It occurs in the nucleus.
Primary protein Structure The basic protein strand after translation occurs.
How many amino acids are there? There are 20 amino acids.
How many codons are there? There are 64 codons.
Whyare there more codons than amino acids? So there is more than 1 more codon than amino acid.
