Lunch Money • You should have received a letter detailing the POS system used by our cafeteria. • Your child has a “pin” number to purchase a school lunch in the cafeteria. • Money may be applied to your child’s account on any day. • You may also utilize the PayForIt.net or go to the NA website and locate “PayForIt.” • Please make sure that your child’s name, our classroom section and room number (1F-111), pin number, and the amount are written on the outside of the envelope. • If your child has brought money for only that day’s lunch, he/she will take the money with them to lunch.

  11. Parent Volunteers • Parent volunteers are very welcome and needed in our classroom. If you can assist in any way, your help will be greatly appreciated!  • All volunteers must report to the office before coming to the classroom. Please sign in and receive an identification badge. Please sign out and return the badge when you have completed volunteering in our classroom. • You are not permitted to visit any other areas of the building without permission. • The school policy is that parents are not to bring other children when they volunteer.

  12. Parent Volunteers (con’t) • Friday mornings- CENTERS • 9:45-11:00 2-3 parent volunteers will be needed to run various centers, which might involve a game, craft, etc. • Other times • Thursday envelopes, Mystery Readers, organizing, cutting, assembling, etc. 

Birthday Celebrations • We like our children to share birthday celebrations with their classmates! • Due to the “Wellness Policy” and to protect children with allergies, please consider a non-food item if you want to provide a treat. • Edible treats MUST be approved by nurse 48 hours prior to distribution. • Online form can be found on my website • We will celebrate summer birthdays at the end of the school year , and a schedule of your child’s celebration day will be sent home in May. • Please do not send birthday invitations to school unless there is one for every boy, every girl, or all children in the class. We don’t want any hurt feelings.

  15. Absent Work • If your child is absent, his/her work will be collected and sent home when he/she returns to school (this includes vacations) • Do not need to return work UNLESS there is a specific note attached to an activity! 

  16. Homework Folder • PLEASE check and empty this folder every night! • LEFTat home- keep it at home. • RIGHTback to school- homework for the evening, or something else that needs to be returned.

Homework • Spelling/Handwriting (Monday-Thursday) • Practice every night! • Test on Friday • Math (Monday-Thursday) • Typically the “Practice” side is homework, the “Challenge” side is optional  Addition HW may come home if not finished at school or specifically to help your child • These labels can be found at the bottom of the worksheets. • Reading • Rereading stories, sentences, words, etc. for fluency • See homework handout

  19. Book It! • Monthly free personal pan pizza. • At least 12 books each month (with or without help!) 3 books per week. • Record on reading log. • Send in once 12 books are recorded and the favorite book activity on the back is completed.  • Only 1 per month! Begins in Oct.

Behavior Management • Traffic Light System • Green- Monthly Chart which should stay in your child’s folder! • After 1-2 verbal warnings… • Yellow- yellow card sent in homework folder with a note. • Sign & return note! • Red- stay in from recess for 20 minutes the next day • Sign & return note! • Incentives: • Individual- Tickets-Names pulled on Fridays • Class- we are working on completing our compliment chain.

  21. Book Orders • Order ONLINE or send in forms • www.scholastic.com/parentordering • Order by: due date on note sent home with flyers (Sept. 26th) • Class code: HLWXN • Orders CANNOT be placed after due date. • Books typically arrive within 1 week from class purchase date

  22. Recess • The children go outdoors for recess unless it is extremely cold, raining, or snowing. • It is always windy on this hill. • Please keep these factors in mind and dress your child accordingly. • Keeping a jacket in your child’s backpack, just in case, is strongly encouraged!

  23. Celebrity of the Week! Complete poster to be returned on Monday. • Monday- share poster. • Tuesday- Estimation Station day • Wednesday- Sit in the teacher’s chair for Math! • Thursday- Special pen for morning work • Friday- pick from prize basket.

Science • Seasons • Weather • Pond Walk • Each season, weather permitting, we will take a “Pond Walk” to the pond that is located behind our playground. • Our “pond walks” are always tentatively scheduled due to weather, volunteers, and possible other factors. • Please have your child wear old tennis shoes on the day of a scheduled pond walk. • Note will be sent home!

  30. CogAT Testing • The CogAT (a cognitive abilities test) will be administered to the First-Grade students October 9-12. • Make sure your child is well-rested and has eaten breakfast! • Oct. 9: practice test • Oct. 10-12: actual testing

  33. MES Anti-Bullying Rules • We will not bully others. • We will try to help students who are bullied. • We will try to include students who are left out. • If we know someone who is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
