M1845, Card Records of Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, ca. 1879-ca. 1903 • Act of Congress, Feb. 3, 1879, extended the privilege of government provided gravestones for soldiers buried in private cemeteries • Following World War I, the Cemetery Branch became the Cemetery Division when it consolidated with the Graves Registration Service who supervised the burying, placing of headstones, and record-keeping for American dead abroad during World War I. • Cards are arranged alphabetically by surname and then by first name. Each card gives some of the following: rank, company and regiment, place of burial including cemetery name, and community, county and state in which it’s located, grave number if any, date of death and supplier of the gravestone.
20th Century Pension Records • No clear cut acts giving pensions to World War I veterans • Mostly VA based on disability • Later 20th century pensions based on service or disability • Post World War II pensions handled by Defense Financing (DFAS)
