  1. WEIRD - enabling Fire Prevention with WiMAXMarília CuradoUniversity of Coimbramarilia@dei.uc.pt

  2. Outline • Introduction • WiMAX - the key technology • WEIRD - the extension of WiMAX

  3. Introduction • The Mediterranean Basin is very prone to forest fires. • The fire detection is very poor, since fires occur in remote or isolated areas. • Actual detection relies on humans assisted with cellular technologies.

  4. WiMAX – the key technology • WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability Microwave Access) overcomes limitations of current technologies. • WiMAX can work on licensed and license-exempt bands. • WiMAX is easy to deploy. • Can be installed during a fire combat to provide communication facilities. • Supports mobility.

  5. WEIRD – the extension of WiMAX • WEIRD (WiMAX Extension to Isolated Research Data Networks) brings WiMAX to end-users. • WEIRD provides interfaces to configure channels according to the requirements of applications. • WEIRD includes mechanisms that automatically configure the channel according to their needs.

  6. WEIRD – the extension of WiMAX innovating Fire Prevention. • Actual Fire Prevention relies on humans in watch towers located in areas with no cellular coverage. • WEIRD provides applications with high video quality which can be used by coordination centers to monitor vast and remote areas.
