EUMETCast

EUMETCast is a high-volume near-real-time data dissemination system. It provides redundancy across all elements and is managed by EUMETSAT. The system supports various data sources, including DVB broadcast, DWD, EARS, and SAFs. It offers reliable data transmission through a combination of DVB multicast technology and communication infrastructure. EUMETCast allows for simultaneous product availability, closed-loop monitoring, and high service level agreements. It is scalable, cost-effective, and can be integrated with various communication networks.

  6. EUMETSAT Dissemination Services • Dissemination of EUMETSAT Meteosat and METOP data • Foreign Satellite Data (e.g. GOES) • Meteorological Products • DWDSAT • DCP • MDD (WMO Region 1) • BMD (WMO Region 6) • EARS • GEONETCast data • All those services make use of the EUMETCast framework

  7. EUMETCast • Generic, multi-mission dissemination system based on the standard DVB multicast technology and a combination of communication infrastructure • Independent of local (network) infrastructure at the reception side • Simultaneous product availability across the broadcast footprint • Closed-loop product and performance monitoring • High SLA of 99.50% with very rigid, guarantied and mission relatedtimeliness(e.g. 3m50sec MET8 image timeliness across EUMETCast footprint) (new return-ackn. will support resend to reach up to 99.99) • Scalable by usage of commercial telecommunication satellites (using a set of broadcast forward channels) • Allowing the usage of off-the shelf, commercial, inexpensive equipment for reception

  8. EUMETCast Communication System Integration • WMO and regional networks (GTS, RMDCN) • Private networks • IP-VPN networks • Internet • Broadcast (including encryption and mission oriented guarantied timeliness)

  9. EUMETCast Scalability • Already existing standards allow terrestrial link scalability for access to the uplink e.g. the OC-12 (622Mbps) • Migration to DVB-S2 which offers much improved encapsulation, coding, modulation; equipment already available to cater for sustained 138Mbps receipt of multicast data with one device on one receiving station • Typical transponders 32, 54, 72 Mbps • Missions can be spread across several transponders

  10. BMD as example for a non-imagery RA VI mission • From 1 September 2005 the RA VI Basic Meteorological Data (BMD) became operational for a two year pilot phase. • Service contains: • SYNOP, TEMP, PILOT, Warnings and Tropical Cyclone data: • Forecast data in GRIB format from ECMWF and DWD: • Charts of WAFS, Aerological Diagrams, basic meteorological field parameters and observations in graphical form. • Access to BMD is restricted to the WMO members (National Meteorological Services and partner organisations) of the WMO Regional Association VI.

  11. DWDSAT as example for a RA VI mission • DWDSAT is a service provided by DWD which carries a variety of meteorological data with restricted access to DWD authorised community. • Service contains: • SYNOP, TEMP, PILOT, Warnings and Tropical Cyclone data, Radar data etc. • Charts of WAFS, Diagrams, meteorological field parameters and observations in graphical and WMO formats • Access to DWDSAT is restricted in accordance with DWD regulations for this service. • EUMETCast is used as fully managed service. • A similar scheme could be applied for RA-VI EUMETCast GTS dissemination

  12. Procedure to become a EUMETCast Data Provider • - Specification to EUMETSAT: • Data (files) to be transmitted, with attributes • Size • Frequency (per hour, day, week, month …) • Time (hh:mm) of transmission • Timeliness requirements - Discussion/clarification with EUMETSAT of technical issues (like need for a segmentation of files for very large file sizes) - Test Phase: File transfers from Data Provider to Uplink Service Provider, transmissions via satellite, Reception Station handling - Request to the STG OPSWG for inclusion of this data into the EUMETCast services, subsequent endorsement by STG/Council - Inclusion into the operational EUMETCast schedule

  13. GEONETCast Overview GEONETCast

  14. GEONETCast Overview

  15. GEONETCast Coverage EUMETCast Europe (EUMETSAT) FENGYUNCast (CMA) EUMETCast and GEONETCast Americas (NOAA/EUMETSAT) EUMETCast Africa (EUMETSAT)

  16. When is EUMETCast usefull? • Same data with • data policy attached needs to be • securely and • routinely (continuous) transmitted • at the same time to at least • more than 5 destinations, in • a big geographic area • attached with a required timeliness and • service level, and the • number of destinations is expected to scale up and • no additional cost is expected per each new destination

  17. EUMETCast and WIS • All WMO specified DCPC-GISC interfaces are being implemented • EUMETCast as dissemination system for the RMDCN GTS component • EUMETCast Severe Weather warning dissemination
