Convergence of IPTV and Mobile TV Julien Maisonneuve July 2008
Agenda • Scope and use cases • Work Proposals • Work with others
1 Scope and Use Cases
Working Assumptions • Convergence of IPTV and MobileTV • Any use case where both have a role to play • Implies interworking/interoperability between IPTV and mobileTV • Problems well identified • Many MobileTV standards in existence, many upcoming IPTV standards • Defined as Silos without any interoperability path • Convergence not addressed or very limited (e.g. within the silo) • Technology islands, fight for supremacy, reduced services and content for each • Many existing IPTV systems • without any interoperability path • Heterogeneous solution should be assumed (new common architecture unlikely) • Content Offer without standard interfaces • Content Distribution without standard interfaces
This Group’s Scope • Transversal problems (spanning more than one technical solution) • Convergence of IPTV and mobileTV : multi-screen • Could cover interworking between iptvs and mobileTVs • Content Distribution (applied to fixed networks, wifi, wimax, mobile,…) • Facilitate timely content transfer from source to sink with efficient resource usage • Use cases that cannot be addressed adequately in existing bodies • Bodies centered on one technology or silo • Bodies centered on specific constituencies or areas • Problems that naturally span several bodies (content origination ?) • Overall Goal • Enable new uses and business models • Enable more technical solutions into the game, including existing ones
This Group • Originality and Legitimacy • Not betting on a given “Technology Island” or Silo • Aims at providing interoperation between • Existing technical solutions (DVB-IP, proprietary, DVB-H/SH/IPDC, OMA BCAST,…) • Upcoming technical solutions (IMS,…) • Consequences • Must not make overly large assumptions on common elements or concepts (network…) • Need to concentrate on higher level of abstraction • Offers an interworking interface • Technical solutions (products) can elect to support … or not
Nonexhaustive list of possible Use Cases • Transfer program from phone to TV (or Tv2Tv, Ph2Ph, sync or async) • Common program production and formatting • Cross-platform profile access and billing • Cross-platform content access • Cross-platform nPVR control and access • PC access to IPTV/MTV • « User experience » portability (not only video) • Same program on all screens • … • What probably cannot be achieved (non goals) • Same content protection, same management
Example Use Case : IPTV-MobileTV session transfer • John is watching soccer on his TV, must pickup wife at station • Select « transfer program » in IPTV client • Select « destination device » as « my mobile phone » • - Signaling happens between IPTV system and MobileTV system - • Phone client receives notification • Asks confirmation, then displays channel with soccer program MobileTV system IPTV system i/w i/f Mobile Network Internal i/f Internal i/f
2 Work Proposals
Work Method • Classical standard work chaining • Use case collection • Requirement definition • Architecture definition • Interface definition • Testing ?
Overall Picture IPTV systems Content Providers i/w ? Content Delivery i/w ? HGw Access Internet Mediation ? i/w ? Mobile Content Delivery MobileTV systems
Content Distribution • Proposed Goal • Enable timely distribution of content from source to sink with efficient resource usage • Motivation • Distribution not always efficient, or timely (especially from internet) • Possible Subjects • Content provider interface • Content Distribution interfaces • P2P or not P2P : why, where ? An implementation issue ? • Content Protection impact ? • PVR in content distribution ?
Convergence in *TV • Proposed Goal • Enable interoperation between *TV systems and support specific use cases • Motivation • Convergence not specified outside of Silos • Possible subjects • Billing, Profile access • Cross system notification, program correlation • Support of rich content guides ? • …
A word on Content Protection • Many competing technical options in the marketplace • OMA DRM, DVB CA, DVB CPCM, Marlin,… • Huge dispute, not going to be settled here, let’s avoid the debate • Potential to be a significant roadblock for many use cases • Some of it technical, some of it business models • What is remaining ? • Impact of content protection aspects on some use cases • Opacity of transmitted content (no access to I-frames,…) • Per-session encryption impact on caching • DRM extensions to support right export/import ? • Defining key roadblocks to use cases • Use as a tool for CP solution selection ? • Define required support for richer business models, ultimately provide it ? • Not selecting business models, but enabling • Ultimately decision belongs in business partners
3 Working with others
Working with others • Partnership is key • This initiative threatens many other organisations • They claim a similar scope with their SILO • Must avoid competition to avoid creating ANOTHER solution • Must talk to stakeholders in different IPTV and MTV organisations (DVB, TISPAN, OMA, OIPTVF, ATIS IIF, ITU-T IPTV GSI, 3GPP,…) • Must defer to others when this makes sense • Same use cases, same operational constraints and features in same environment • When work programme is realistically more timely
Existing and upcoming work examples • OMA • Working on IPTV extensions to its mobileTV for BCAST 2.0 • DCD DVB • Working on Open Internet Content Distribution with P2P • IPDC • …
