History of Strategic Doing in Puerto Rico • University of Puerto Rico faculty participated in the Pathways to Innovation SD training at Stanford in 2014 • Liz continued to meet with UPR team leaders on a regular basis • UPR reported more than 30 different Pathway projects over the course of the initiative • UPR-Mayaguez was a standout campus, with more than 21 projects underway and 17 complete within 2 years • UPR-M leaders interested in establishing SD affiliation
Puerto Rico in financial crisis over the last decade • Government overspending and ineffective bureaucracy • Changes in U.S. law (tax policy, bankruptcy) • Job losses (20% drop since 2007) • High unemployment (10% unemployment) • Skilled workers left the island (10% population drop since 2007)
