  1. 4th Year Student Advising Session Mechanical Engineering Department Kate Gleason College of Engineering Rochester Institute of Technology

  2. Summary • Your Academic Advising Report, SIS and ME Degree Audit System • Your Degree Completion Checklist • Planning your courses between now and graduation

  3. Academic Advising Report • You can print a copy of your personal AAR through the Student Information System at any time. • Use the AAR to confirm progress towards your degree, and credit for all activities including transfer, AP, co-op, course repeats, etc.

  4. ME Degree Audit System • Diane prepares the ME Degree Audit checklist to show outstanding courses needed for degree completion • Bring any discrepancies between the AAR and the ME-DAS to Diane’s attention. • Compare ME-DAS and AAR to your personal records!

  5. Application for Graduation • Fill one complete form out for each degree you will receive • File the form at the start of your second to last quarter of enrollment (e.g. Fall or Winter of your fifth year) • Dual degree students should indicate which quarter they anticipate being done with ALL degree requirements for EACH DEGREE independently!

  6. Repeat of Grade Form • Make sure your SIS AAR indicates “Re” for each repeated course • Failure to file a Repeat of Grade form may adversely impact your GPA! • Do not wait until the last quarter! File these earlier to make sure the proper GPA computation appears on interview transcripts!

  7. Liberal Arts Worksheet • Start working on your liberal arts worksheet now! • You must satisfy both the CORE and CONCENTRATION Requirements! • Your Liberal Arts Worksheet needs to be approved by Liberal Arts Office of Academic Advising, not by Mechanical Engineering!

  8. Your Degree Completion Checklist • You should prepare your OWN checklist to prepare a plan towards graduation • These are available in the ME Office • Versions available for each program option (BS/MS, BS/MEng, Auto, Aero, etc.) • Resolve discrepancies 3 qtr’s prior to graduation!

  9. Common Pitfalls • Make sure every co-op segment has student and employer work reports completed – do not let “I” roll to “F”! • Verify completion of all wellness (Phys. Ed.) requirements • Verify completion of the Writing Assessment • Verify all Transfer an A/P Credit on AAR

  10. Planning Courses

  11. Senior Design Pre-requisites • Senior Design is intended to be the capstone experience for M.E. students that helps with the transitions from “student” to “practicing engineer.” • Senior Design I and II should be immediately prior to graduation! • You must be at fifth year standing in order to register for senior design. This means… • Completion of at least three co-op blocks • Completion of your degree plan checklist, showing your quarter by quarter plan of study through graduation • Due to curricular change approved by the faculty, students may elect to take four technical electives (0304-464 DFM has been replaced with a technical elective) • There have been significant changes to senior design, particularly with respect to scheduling logistics, and the introduction of multi-disciplinary teams. You should plan to use Fridays for Senior Design!

  12. To-Do List for Graduation • All M.E. students must complete the writing competency test. This should be done in your third year. DO IT NOW!! • File an APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION form for each degree you will complete. Dual Degree students must file two forms! • File a REQUEST FOR REPEAT OF GRADE form for every course that you have taken twice, to insure proper computation of your GPA and PFOS GPA. • Plan a quarter by quarter schedule of classes and co-op between today and graduation. Compare your plan against the course rotation to make sure the classes are offered when you plan to take them! • Complete your LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS WORKSHEET to insure that you have met these requirements. • Confirm that your co-op reports (student and employer) have been filed for each co-op segment completed. • Confirm that all information regarding AP and TRANSFER credit is on file in the Mechanical Engineering Office.
