  2. Definition „Performance- andAppearance- EnhancingSubstances(PAES) refertothosesubstances that are used to build muscles, lose weight and generally enhance the athleticperformance.“

  3. Definition Thereare 2 kindsof PAES: • CONTROLLED substances aremonitoredbythegovernmentand/or a sportgoverningbody such asthe World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) becausetheycancauseharm. Itis not possibletoobtainthosesubstances in a legal way Examples: EPO, anabolicsteroids, growthhormones • NOT CONTROLLED substances are not monitoredandlegallyavailableforeveryone Examples: painkillers (e.g. aspirin) dietarysupplementsasproteinshakes, creatine, vitaminsandminerals

  8. Role Play – The Situation Imagine 3 younggymuserssitting in thecommon/bar areaofthegym. Twoofthem just tried a newsubstancethathelpedthemtoget a lotfurtherachievingtheirexercisinggoals. Nowtheytrytoconvincetheirfriendtousethissubstanceaswell. • Play thesituationusingthe pro argumentsyou just collected (Group 1)! After recommendingtheirwonder-substance, thefriends are leaving the room. Nowothergymuserssittingaroundandlisteningtheconversationcomeuptopreventtheyoungguyusingthissubstance. • Members of Group 2 presenttheircollected con argumentsplaying the othergymusers!

  10. Summary To ask friends and peers can have advantages as well as disadvantages: You might share some features and goals regarding your appearance and performance. On the other hand there might be a lack of professional knowledge, etc… BUT... ... Everybody is an individual! What is suitable for your friend does not have to be suitable for you as well. Thus: Evaluate friend‘s arguments critically and do not let it be the only source to consider for information!
