  4. What is colonialism? • Colonialism is the forming of a colonyby a group of people who seek to take control of territories or countries. It usually involves large-scale immigration of people to a 'new' location and the expansion of their civilisation and culture into this area. • A group of colonies is often referred to as an Empire. • In the past, colonialism was often seen as a positive phenomenon. However, more recently,it has been viewed in negative terms, as a process founded upon power, violence, and racism. • Do you know anything about French colonialism ?

What does ‘colonial’ mean? • The word ‘colonial’ is often used to describe the society or culture produced within a colonized country. • For example, ‘colonial film’, ‘colonial literature’, ‘colonial culture’ • These works of art could have been produced by colonized people or the ‘colonisers’.

  7. What does ‘Empire’ mean?

  8. What does ‘Empire’ mean? • A large group of colonies who are ruled by a single supreme authority. • In the past this authority was usually an emperor or empress • See for example, the Roman Empire • Or the British Empire

  9. The British Empire • The British Empire was established in late 16th and early 18th centuries. • During the early twentieth century (1815-1914), Britain owned largest amount of colonies in the world.

What is decolonization? • Decolonization is the process by which a colony becomes independent • In other words, how a country gains national independence • This process can be achieved through political debate and agreement • However, in the past, it has often required violenceand, in some cases, war.

  14. What is post-colonial? • Post-colonial is an adjective used to describe the period following a country’s achievement of national independence (‘post’ means ‘after’) • So, we might talk about ‘post-colonial literature’, or ‘post-colonial film’ • These cultural artifacts can be produced by individuals associated with the formally colonized country or by the former colonizers
