Study of Hebrews Lesson3
Hebrews 1:5 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, " I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"?
Hebrews 1:6-7 6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.“ 7 And of the angels He says, "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE."
Hebrews 1:8-9 8 But of the Son He says, "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM. 9 "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS."
Hebrews 1:10-12 10 And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; 11 THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT, 12 AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END."
Hebrews 1:13-14 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET"? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Hebrews 1:5 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, " I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"? • In comparing the angels to Jesus, the author’s first argument to Jesus’ superiority is “God called Him ‘my son’” • These OT passages are Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14
Hebrews 1:6 6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.“ • The second argument to Jesus’ superiority over the angels is that the angels worshipped Jesus • Why does this support the argument that Jesus is superior? • This is Psalm 97:7
Hebrews 1:7 7 And of the angels He says, "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE." • The third argument is that … uh … what’s the third argument here? • God doesn’t call his angels ‘Sons’ but instead gives them less important tasks to complete than Jesus did • Psalm 104:4
Hebrews 1:8 8 But of the Son He says, "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM. • The fourth argument is that Jesus’ throne is forever and ever • If Jesus has the throne forever, who can’t possible ever be greater? • The fifth argument is that Jesus holds the scepter of the kingdom • A symbol of power and authority
Hebrews 1:9 9 "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS." • The sixth argument is that Jesus was anointed above His companions • Who are His companions? • Hebrews 1:8-9 is Psalms 45:6-7
Hebrews 1:10-12 • 10 And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, … • This “and” refers back to 1:8’s “of the Son He says” – so it’s about Jesus • Argument 7 – Jesus / God created everything
Hebrews 1:10-12 12 AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END." • Argument 8 is you’re immortal • Argument 9 is that He will never change • Psalms 102:25-27
Hebrews 1:13 • 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET"? • Argument 10 is God gave Jesus the position of power at His right hand • Psalms 110:1
Hebrews 1:14 • 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? • Finally, argument 11 is much like argument 3 • The angels are ministering spirits used to render service to the saved • Jesus isn’t – He’s Lord and Christ
Hebrews 1:6-14 • So, the author gives 11 separate arguments to Christ’s superiority over the angels • What does he use as proof to substantiate all of them but the last one? • Not just Scripture – the Old Testament! • “You know that thing you want to go back to? It even testifies to the superiority of Jesus Christ over itself!”
