The Art Of Maori • The Maori have always been an artistic people. • Warriors decorated their faces with swirled tattoos. • Other traditions arts included carving and weaving
Maori weaving • Maori woman used flax to weave sandles, skirts, cloaks, baskets and mats. • They decorated their weavings with dyes made from berries, as well as feathers and dog hair. • Women also wove wall coverings whech were decorated diamonds and other symmetrecal shapes • Modern artists still practice traditional Maori weaving arts.
The Carving Tradition • Thefirst Maoriin New Zealand found high-quality timber for building their homes. The wood of the totara tree was espcially easy to split and work with stone tools . Men carved designs into logs used to make walls , doors and pillars. • The most popular image was the human form, with a realistic face with complex tattoo markings but an out-of-proportion body----to small and squat. • Scary looking figures ( Tiki’s ) with tongues poking out were placed at the entrances to maori fortresses to frighten enimeis
