Evolution to Wireless Cabin Networks Hasse Sinivaara Project Manager, IP Mobility Networks Nokia Networks hasse.sinivaara@nokia.com
Rationales • Passenger carried terminal driven business-model • End-to-End system that has same entities than any known/used service in "ground based lifestyle" • => Cabin Wireless is not only "A Terminal" • => Cabin Wireless is not only "Internet, E-mail, Content..." • => Cabin Wireless is also Global Roaming, Secure Authentication, Billing (Comfortability) • => Cabin Wireless requires a connection to ground "Signalling, that carries roaming, authentication & billing information per user" • Wireless Technology evolution within next 5 years • EMI entities in cabin (RTCA DO-160D) • New certification process = Educational aspect for authorities

Wireless TechnologiesVoice Communication, "Telecommunication" • Voice communication possibilities • Mobile phones through E1=Circuit switched mode or IP=packet switched mode • E1 requires Inmarsat, IP could work through IFN, Connexion, AirTV… • Inmarsat have limited capacity for multiple calls • IP based calls are sensitive for delays • QoS with simultaneous voice calls/data transfer is not trivial to achieve • Co-existence of E1 <=> IP based services • Co-existence of HW infrastructure possiblity ?? • Possible voivce communication technologies • GSM (EMI dependent, transmit power effects) • Bluetooth (EMI dependent, transmit power/ processing noises) • UMTS/WCDMA (EMI dependent, transmit power effect smaller) • WLAN (EMI dependent, transmit power effects) • HiperLAN / IEEE802.11a (transmit power effects)
EMI & Susceptibility • RTCA DO-160D defines only limits for EMI( ElectroMagnetic Interference) and Susceptibility limits for individual elements • Wireless terminals are transmitting signals within their operating frequency, RTCA DO-160D DOES NOT define the limit for intented transmissions= "signal" 1. All terminal types has to be separately measured in un-echoic chamber according RTCA DO-160D (EMI & Susceptibility) 2. Terminals/Systems has to be measured in Cabin w/ avionics running, Flight test has to be performed (all airplane types separately) 3. Aviation Authorities FAA/JAA/CAA has to be "educated" about properties of Wireless Technologies 4. New certification process has to be created, after real life tests performed
