Creating Success for NC: A New Advocacy and Legislative Approach Linda H. Weiner, Special Assistant for Engagement and Economic Development NC Community Colleges www.nccommunitycolleges.edu
Where We’ve Been… • Lots of “love” but funding level doesn’t reflect our work, scope, & NC’s needs • Examined success of Mississippi: What could we learn? • Realized a need for a new approach – no matter what the economic outlook • Time to say: We love the “love” but we need $$$
Where We’ve Been… • This led to the Collective Strength and Work of: • Local Trustees • State Board of Community Colleges • Community College Presidents • System Office • Has been presented to: • Business Champions • Faculty Association • Student Governments
Where We Are…. • One budget strategy over two biennia • One simple ask: an additional $1,000 per student over 4 years • One slogan: Creating Success • Three budget areas: • Creating Success for NC’s Students • Creating Success in Critical Careers • Creating Success for NC’s Businesses
Creating Success for North Carolina’s Students • Faculty and Staff Salaries: • $119 million • Gets us to national average by 2013 • Technology and Equipment: • $20 million • Request all T&E funding as recurring • Represents 70% of our total request
Creating Success in Critical Careers • Healthcare: • $37 million • Addresses State’s growing healthcare worker shortage • Technical Education: • $18 million • Recruit for, re-energize and re-emphasize careers demanded by State’s economy
Creating Success for North Carolina’s Businesses • Customized Training Programs: • $7 million • First increase in a decade • Combine with new flexibility to meet growing worker training needs
Creating Success: $1,000 per student over 4 years The Bottom Line: $1,000 X 201,000 FTE = $201 million
Creating Success: Advocacy and Legislative Info • “Creating Success” tagline won the hearts of our committee • For Example: • Creating Success in North Carolina • Creating Success in Johnston County • Creating Success in Healthcare • Creating Success in Manufacturing • Creating Success for our Students
Creating Success: Advocacy and Legislative Info • Words that resonated about what we do: • Hope • Opportunity • Jobs • Working on new ads, templates, etc. using the “look and feel”
Creating Success: Advocacy and Legislative Info • What we’ve accomplished: • Selected a marketing firm • Created a Legislative leave-behind • Template for Success Stories and for delegation presentations • Started drive for 1,000 success stories • Developing TV/radio ads
Creating Success: Advocacy and Legislative Info • What can you do? • Help incorporate the slogan, “Creating Success” and “hope, opportunity, jobs” into everything you do • Look for opportunities to push our successes/budget requests internally and externally
