  2. What’s the big idea? • What is a dictionary? How can I use it to help me find the meaning of words i don’t know? • What are guide words? How can they help me find the word I am looking for?

What is a dictionary? • think back to our lesson yesterday... • what is a dictionary useful for? • Stand up when you can remember 3 things that i can find in a dictionary... • keep standing if you can remember 4 things that i can find a dictionary... • Keep standing if you can remember all 5 things I can find in a dictionary! LET’S SHARE OUT

  4. finding a word in the dictionary • There are over 171,476 words in the english dictionary!! • It would be very hard if the dictionary didn’t help us out by giving us GUIDE WORDS!

  5. let’s review • Guide words: Located at the top of each dictionary page. These are the first and last word on the page. • All other words will fall in between those two guide words! IF YOU KNOW THE ALPHABET... LOOKING UP WORDS IN THE DICTIONARY IT GOING TO BE A PIECE OF CAKE!!

Let’s say we want to look up the word “STRONG” • Step 1: We would turn to the “S” section of the dictionary • Step 2: we would flip through the “s” section and try to find the guide words that strong falls in between. • We use the second letter to guide us, if both of the guide words have an “ST” we then go to the third letter! LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

  7. Alphabetical order • Before we continue with the guide words, let’s practice putting words in alphabetical order!! • If each word starts with a different letter, it is super easy! But, think about what if the words all start with same letter... • Apple, animal, ape, automobile, alarm

Apple, animal, ape, automobile, alarm • If all the words start with the same letter, we look at the second letter • If by chance the words have the same second letter, you move on to the third letter!! • Talk with your partner and see if you can come up with a list on your slate that puts those words in ABC order! ALARM, ANIMAL, APE, APPLE, AUTOMOBILE

  9. On your own... • Put these words in alphabetical order: enter, elephant, ear, exciting, eraser • Hopefully you said... ear, elephant, enter, eraser, exciting • Are you guys ready to take it to the next level?
