  2. Ratio The word ‘ratio’ is used to describe a fraction. If the ratio of a boy’s height to his father’s height is 4:5, then he is 4/5 as tall as his father. Points to note: • A ratio is a way of comparing the sizes of two or more quantities. • When working with a ratio involving different units always change them to a common unit. • A ratio in its simplest form can be expressed as portions by changing the numbers into fractions with the same bottom number.

  3. Ratio Express each of these ratios in its simplest form: 55 : 65 ÷5 11 : 13 3m : 120 cm convert to cms 300 : 120 ÷ 10 30 : 12 ÷ 6 5 : 2 2.5 : 4.5 x 10 25 : 45 ÷ 5 5 : 9 Example

  4. Ratio A ratio can be expressed in the form 1: n. This is called the unitary method. Write these ratios in the form 1 : n 6 cm : 9 cm ÷ 6 1 : 1.5 4 cm : 2 m convert to cm 4 : 200 ÷ 4 1 : 50 Example

  5. Ratio Calculating with Ratio You can divide a quantity in a given ratio Keith and Derek share £245 in the ratio 3 : 7 How much money do they each receive? Keith receives 3parts for every 7 parts Derek receives. Total number of parts = 3 + 7 = 10 parts Each part = £245 ÷ 10 = £24.50 Keith will receive 3 parts = 3 x £24.50 = £73.50 Derek will receive 7 parts = 7 x £24.50 = £171.50 Add up the two parts to check the answer: £73.50 + £171.50 = £245 Example

  6. Ratio Have you ever used a road map or plan and noticed the scale? These are often written using a ratio. On a plan, a real-life measurement of 4m is drawn as a length of 25cm. What is the scale of the plan? ratio of plan : real life 25cm : 4m 25 cm : 400 cm 1 : 16 The scale of the plan is 1 : 16

  7. Ratio A map has a scale of 1 : 2500. A distance in real life is 50m. What is that distance on the map? Distance on map = x distance in real life = x 50m = x 5000 cm = 2 cm
