  1. Journal CH 4.1Forces

  2. Please read pages 80-81 for a few minutes. • The questions that go with these pages will be up after you’ve read the two pages. • You will then find the answer to the following questions on the next page.

  3. Please add anything in black that is not in your journal as part of your answer • What are forces? • Any push or pull • Forces are caused by what? • Examples: • Muscles (hitting a ball with a bat) • Wind • Gravity from a planet • **Any action that can change an object’s motion (please add this to your journal) • 2 different units for force: • Pound in the USA • **Newton everywhere else • Pound to Newton Conversion Factor: • 1 pound = 4.448 Newtons 5. What is 1 Newton? • **1 N is the amount of force needed to move 1 kg

  4. Please read pages 82-83 • The questions that go with these pages will be up after you’ve read the two pages. • You will then find the answer to the following questions on the next page.

  5. 6. Force of Gravity is called: • Weight 7. Gravity on Earth exerts how much force: • 9.8 Newtons 8. Mass means? • Fundamental property of matter • **How many atoms something is made of 9. Weight (Force of Gravity) is? • A force caused by mass and gravity • Weight = Mass x gravity • So… • 1 kg objects push down 9.8 N • 2 kg objects push down 19.6 N

  6. Please read page 84 • The questions that go with these pages will be up after you’ve read the two pages. • You will then find the answer to the following questions on the next page.

  7. What is a force vector: • The direction of a force 11. Force Vector needs 2 items: • Strength and direction

  8. 12. Force of Gravity (weight): not in reading (notes) • Caused by: • the mass of the planet (gravity = 9.8 N on Earth) • the mass of the object ***Larger masses have larger forces of gravity (weight) • Direction of Gravity: Down Fgravity FGravity FGravity FGravity Earth Earth Moon

  9. Gravity vs. Force of Gravity (Weight)not in reading • Gravity is from the mass of the planet only • Weight (Force of Gravity) is from the mass of the object AND the mass of the planet Fgravity FGravity FGravity FGravity Earth Earth Moon
